Let’s Skate Event Day

1.00 PM – 4.00 PM

Let’s skate day on Saturday, September 14th will bring together the skateboarding community once again. Part of The Pool exhibition, including From the Surf to the Sidewalk – When Skateboarding Culture and Architecture Meet and the Lizzie Armanto Colors exhibition, will be open until 15 September.

At the event, you can hear the curator tell the background and story of the exhibition From the Surf to the Sidewalk. You can also ask the curator questions about the connection between skateboarding and architecture, among other things. Oona Markkanen and Ines Särkkä’s documentary film (subtitled in English) about skateboarding from the perspective of eight different women will be available to watch at the event. The day will also provide an opportunity to reflect on a good urban environment through workshop.

The Pool exhibition has been accompanied throughout the summer by a photo challenge to collect skateboarding-related images from skateboarders. The photos have been on display at the Lizzie Armanto Colors exhibition and reflect the same diversity and colourfulness as the Colors exhibition. On the day of the event, you can still see the full set of images from the photo challenge before the exhibition closes on 15 September 2024.

The cost of the Let’s Skate Event Day is the Aalto2 admission fee.

Programme:

Oona Markkanen & Ines Särkkä: What You Did There Was Amazing
(Short Documentary, 2020, Subtitled in English, 35 minutes)

Completed in early 2020, What You Did There Was Amazing is a documentary about skateboarding told from the perspective of female skaters. For these women, it’s a lifestyle that’s all-encompassing. Avoiding bruises or scraped elbows is difficult, but the high of success is worth it. At its core, it’s about community and the freedom to be oneself. Skateboarding has traditionally been a male-dominated sport, and the documentary also presents the history of Finnish skateboarding from a female perspective. The documentary is available for viewing in the auditorium of the Central Finland Museum.

City for All – Workshop

What makes a city good? How does a pleasant and functional city consider diverse people? What kind of city provides good opportunities for skateboarding and other activities?

The workshop offers perspectives on urban planning for children and teenagers. In the workshop, you can build a house or another component of a community-driven urban structure. At the same time, you can consider what kind of environment is left between the buildings. Where do spaces and opportunities for skateboarding emerge? Or will you build a skateable rail or bump? Through the completed urban structure, we’ll reflect on what makes a good (future) city and environment. At the end, you can take a photograph of the structure as a memento. You are welcome to come and build during the workshop from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
