- 17.10.2026
1.00 PM – 2.00 PM
A series of two lectures by Mauri Karvonen, a researcher of the spirit world and an expert in Finnish history, sheds light on the boundaries between this world and the afterlife. The first lecture will be held at the Aalto2 Museum Centre, and the second in the Toivola Old Courtyard in the centre of Jyväskylä. In Finnish.
In Finnish folklore, November is, as its name “marraskuu” suggests, the month of death. The late-autumn harvest festival, Kekri, and the spirits of the dead – or ghosts – are also closely linked. A series of two lectures by Mauri Karvonen, a researcher of the spirit world and an expert in Finnish history, will shed light on the boundaries between this world and the afterlife on 17 October 2026.
The first lecture “In the Footsteps of Ghosts – An Introduction to the Spirit World” will take place at the Aalto2 Museum Centre at 1.00 pm, and the second “Ghost stories and tragic fates in the Toivola Old Courtyard” in the Toivola Old Courtyard at 4.00 pm (address: Cygnaeuksenkatu 2, Jyväskylä). On the same day, the autumnal atmosphere of Kekri will fill the Toivola Old Courtyard.
In the Footsteps of Ghosts – An Introduction to the Spirit World
Would you like to find out what ghosts are? Do they exist? Why do they return here amongst the living? Do they have a story to tell? Where do ghosts roam and why? What kinds of ghosts are there? You’ll find answers to these questions in a lecture by Mauri Karvonen, a researcher of the spirit world and an expert in Finnish history. In Finnish.
The Lecture is included in the Aalto2 admission fee.
