Alvar Aalto Museum

The Alvar Aalto Foundation is responsible for preserving the material and spiritual legacy of the world-renowned architect and designer, Alvar Aalto. Through its activities, it promotes awareness of the works of Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto, as well as the ideas that influenced their design philosophy. The Alvar Aalto Museum is part of the Alvar Aalto Foundation and operates within the Aalto2 Museum Centre.

Founded in 1966, the Alvar Aalto Museum is housed in a museum building designed by architect Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) and completed in 1973. It is part of the Aalto2 Museum Centre in Jyväskylä.

The Alvar Aalto Museum’s permanent exhibition offers audiences an in-depth exploration of Alvar Aalto’s life’s work. It delves beneath the surface of the architect’s practice and design process, whether in relation to an individual building, an urban centre, a piece of furniture, or a regional plan.

The exhibition is guided by Aalto’s optimistic belief that architecture and good design can solve the challenges of human life and society – or, as Aalto himself put it, “probleems.” The significance of Alvar and Aino Aalto in the history of Finnish design is presented alongside their architectural work.

The display relies on the power of the genuine and authentic – architectural drawings, scale models, and design objects.

The exhibition is supported by Alva, Artek, and the Saastamoinen Foundation.
