The Museum Camp

Museum Camp (2 days) will be held in the Alvar Aalto Museum’s workshop space and outdoor area. Over the course of two days, participants will build nests, shelters, cabins, and floating houses. You can choose to attend just one workshop or take part in all of them. Campers will explore the basics of construction, the importance of design, and different elements of space.

You’re welcome to bring your own packed lunch, or enjoy a meal at the Aalto2 Museum Centre café after the workshops. The workshops are suitable for children aged 7 and up. Younger builders are welcome to take part with an accompanying adult. Each workshop has space for 12 participants. Please sign up no later than two days before the workshop. Each session will run with a minimum of 5 participants.

Mini Houses of All Kinds

Shelter-Style House – Fri 6 June, 10:00–12:00
Create a sweet little house, nest or shelter for a fairytale or imaginary character using natural materials. You can build a miniature home for your own favourite mascot, or invent a brand new character to live in it.

Floating House – Fri 6 June, 13:00–15:00
Design a colourful, airy house to hang from a tree. We’ll look at the shapes and structures of bird nests and basket-like constructions. You can hang your creation in the big birch tree in the museum courtyard or take it home with you.

Green Roof House – Sat 7 June, 10:00–12:00
Discover the traditional Finnish log-building method and create a miniature log house from wooden sticks. As in the old days, you’ll plant grass and wildflowers on the roof or around the yard. You can watch your green roof grow at home over the summer!

Floating House – Sat 7 June, 13:00–15:00
Build a house that floats on water! Outside the Alvar Aalto Museum there’s a pool where you can test your structure’s buoyancy. Play with materials and shapes – imagine yourself as a boatbuilder!
