PM 1:00 Lecture by Heta Saarinen on the symbolism of the altar painting (in Finnish)

Tove Jansson created her only altar painting for Teuva Church in 1953. The work is rich in symbolism, and its interpretation of the biblical parable is unique in many ways. Jansson drew heavily from older Mediterranean cultural influences, but the piece also reflects northern Lutheran traditions. At the same time, the work is connected to the post-war atmosphere, where artists were reflecting on human nature, both good and evil. The painting process in Teuva itself was challenging and adds an extra layer to the work.

Master of Theology Heta Saarinen explored the meanings and production process of Jansson’s altar painting in her master’s thesis. In her lecture, she will address questions such as: Where did Jansson draw inspiration for her work? What roles do the figures play? Are there deeper symbolic meanings in the piece? What was the process like in the difficult conditions of its creation?

The lecture is held in Finnish.

The lecture is included with Aalto2 Museum Centre admission fee.
