The Experimental House is a studio and summer apartment designed by Alvar and Elissa Aalto for themselves, located on the west shore of Muuratsalo island, about 30 minutes by car from the Aalto2 museum centre. The Experimental House is in a beautiful location on the cliff of Päijänne, but still sheltered by the forest. Here, Aalto had the freedom to experiment with different materials, shapes, techniques and proportions. As a model, the villa has an ancient atrium house. The Muuratsalo Experimental House is a summer house, and Aalto2 organizes public tours there between June 2 and August 31, 2025, in both Finnish and English. Participation in the public tours is only possible with a ticket purchased in advance. The tour can accommodate a maximum of 15 people. The guided part of the visit lasts about 45 minutes, and after that you can tour the area on your own. Please note that the Muuratsalo Experimental House is partly accessed via a difficult forest path, so the destination is not barrier-free.

Attention for summer 2025 visitors!
Louhusalmi bridge leading to Experimental House will be restricted to bus and heavy traffic during whole summer 2025, due to repair work. Crossing the bridge is allowed only for passenger and van traffic, one car at a time.
The weight limit for vehicles is 3,500 kilograms, including passengers. Please take this into account, especially when making reservations for larger groups! And if necessary, to find out the weight of your own vehicle.
Busses can transport guests to Säynätsalo Municipal Hall, but from there further transport to Experimental House must be changed to smaller vehicles. The trip is about 4.7 km and takes 10 minutes.
The local taxi company in Säynätsalo operates in the area with both passenger cars and minivans.
